What To Do In Your 40s

I have been reading this emails recently from Jeff Henderson, he is the author of What to do Next, an excellent book you should read. I’m going to share with you some information on what to do in your forties just because it applies to me as well, but I will be sharing with you what to do in your 20s and 30s and 50s in the next few days.

If you are in this season of your life here is what you should do in your 40s:

  1. Provide an Annual Financial Report for your family. This include an update on any investments, account numbers and passwords, who to contact and suggestions on what to do with each investment. “A wise an loving husband prepares his wife to be a widow.” This may sound depressing but it is very wise.
  2. Continue to think of yourself as an athlete, and keep training. Most people who played sports stopped seeing themselves as athletes when their athletic career stopped. We still in the most important game of all- the game of life. Keep training. This not only impacts you physically, it benefits you mentally, emotionally and spiritually.
  3. Read the book of proverbs. Regardless about what you think of the Bible. Proverbs is a treasure trove of wisdom. There is priceless guidance there for you to use for your second half of life.
  4. Read more. Watch less.
  5. Review your insurance policy annually
  6. Leave a paper trail . Write one handwritten note a week to each member of your family, thanking and encouraging them for being in your life.
  7. Colonoscopy. This and other assessments annually.
  8. Consider a side hustle. This isn’t for everyone but a side hustle can often be a pathway to your future.
  9. Establish a healthy morning routine. A great day begins the night before. Instead of scattered approach to the day, define a morning routine that sets you up for success.
  10. Increase the percentage of money that you are saving and giving away. If you are at 10% for each, aim for 11%. Also if you have kids and haven’t started a college education savings plan, its better late than never.

My Daughter, My Inspiration

I don’t know why I introduced Alexa to Keyani.  All she wants to do is to talk to her and sometimes they get into arguments. However I do enjoy listening the back and forth conversations. Sometimes I’m glad she is around and sometimes I feel I want to return her. (Not my child, Alexa)haha!

I remember the times when my little precious gift was all a cloud in my head. So little, didn’t know how to hold her, I was so afraid of her choking on her food, I was super afraid I would roll over her in bed when she was next to me. Anyway is was an adventure that I know you lived if you have kids.

Sometimes as parents we feel paralyzed for a lack of better word.  Parenting can be very challenging, but I want you to realize how blessed you are.

As a parent my role as well as your role will never end until you are six feet under. If you do parenting right, the memories,  experiences and seeds of wisdom that you deposit in your child will last throughout your lifetime,  and for many generations after.

That is the legacy you want to leave to your child and their children’s children.  If the legacy is going to happen, we as parents must rise up and begin to take back our children and families.

Give thanks, extremely important.  One of the things I do as soon as I wake up.  But today I give more thanks because 4 days ago I realized how blessed I am.  This week appreciation for me was said out loud, in front of many people.  My duty always in life has been to be able to return that gratitude to others.  Many people think that there are no good people and the truth is that there are.  There are many beautiful, friendly and ready people to help you.  The other days I thought, wow He waited almost 3 months for me.  3 months later he sees the fruits of that decision.  In life there are times when you have to wait for the good, for the fruits that you sow.  If someone waits for me professionally, I can wait for you.  Be patient.  Wait for the good, sometimes it takes time, but when it comes, it comes at the right time.  So thank you.  That is why I am always grateful.  That is why I am always willing to be that person that you are waiting to come into your life.  Take the opportunities.

Why is it important to be Thankful?

I have been doing some searching for quite sometime. For now I will just call it an “intimate search”. Have you ever been in my situation before? A time where you are searching for something? Sometimes people search for something like peace, a new job, a revelation, a sign, clarity, for the perfect friend, a haircut, a tattoo, etc… I think this is something very common I hope.

Well, when you are on the search of that “something ” do you pay attention to what’s around you? Do you wait and pay attention to the signs? Or do you just search and forget to get ready and miss the signs? I think you need to pay attention to this. As I was on my search, praying and working hard for what I’m searching for, I actually got the answers that I needed in order to move on. How do I know? Well because as I said before I listen, I stay aware and I make sure I do not miss the signs.

Today I am so thankful. I’m thankful because I have been looking for a life coach to work with. When I look for something that is important to me, I make sure that I find the right person. I am by nature a very picky person and I am not afraid to say it. I am a person with very high expectations/standards. Sometimes that is good and sometimes not so much. However as I was doing my research I found someone that I really liked, but that person was charging way more than what I would’ve liked to pay for.

In the meantime I learned about this other person but she was booked. She is not taking new clients until January 2021. Well, I decided to be on her waiting list since she shared with me she had one. One day , probably two weeks after her email telling me that she would love to put me on her waiting list I get an email saying she had an opening. I said to myself, Oh My God!!! This is so wonderful!!. I let her know that I was highly interested. I took the opening. We talked few days later. She wanted to know what I was looking for in order for her to have an idea if she could help me. She explained to me what she does and we went over the paper work/agreement she had emailed me prior to my call. Well, guess what? It was a great conversation. She liked me and for sure I liked her. So the next step was to make an appointment to further explain myself, meet her in person and see if we could work together.

I made it to the appointment and let me tell you I had the best appointment ever. The thing I enjoyed the best was when she said Janitza I would love to work with you if you would like to work with me. I will open time on my schedule for you. Wow! You are talking about gratitude, right? That was so powerful. We are a match and on top of that I can afford her, so it is a win- win.

Now, part of my search has been found. Let me be clear, this is not “my intimate search” Omg, I have found someone who is willing to help me, someone who is adding time to her schedule to work with me. This lady has had to reduce her hours because her mother is ill and she cares for her and she wants to spend as much time as possible with her. If I am not thankful for this wonderful opportunity, I sure must be out of my mind.

You know how many people I have helped in my life? Do you know the amount of people that I know I have made a difference in their life but I haven’t heard a thank you? That doesn’t mean they are not thankful. It just means that they haven’t said it to me. I do not want to be that kind of a person. Today I want to be the person that shares gratitude.

Today I am thankful. Thankful for my life coach. I made sure to let her know with a thank you card. I am not done yet, I know she will be bringing lots of good to my life and when that happens I will make sure to let her know one more time.

Show gratitude. It is the best exercise someone can practice.
